I used a pocket knife to scrape off the edges and then pry off the  
'lid' of the chip package. Then I carefully dug through the resin that  
fills it ( much softer than the plastic shell ) until I found the  
battery, removed the resin around it, cut off the connectors and  
removed the battery. The connectors don't go straight down but lead to  
the nearest short edge of the package and go down there side by side.  
That's where I soldered new wires in.
