After some faffing around, I netbooted the machine (via le0) and realized
that the last time the machine was updated was during the netbsd-5 era.

The faffing around was due to the "/etc/hosts" file on the machine's
NFS root predating the Great Renumbering I performed on my network, so
the server's name resolved incorrectly. Updating it to reality got it
working properly.
