you may have a strange configuration?

You could "install" using the new, working stuff and then swap again and 
run the installed system. If it passes POST, boot and then run apps 
(including e.g. OpenSSH) then I would say CPU/FPU are Ok?

maybe you are hitting a difference in ROM? or nvram chip?
