And moving the files locally made it work. 
Next problem, missed a dir in nfs root, fixed.
Now waiting 5+ minutes for kernel to decompress :-)

Thanks for the help folks, will let you know if 10.1 installs.

Amusing myself by trying to see how long it takes to compile GCC on a 40Mhz Sparc and a 49Mhz 68030 :-)
