Well, Do'h - I should have thought to have your try ttyb.  I only
mentioned the video card as I saw one once with such a card and
I have never even considered anyone would use what I think of as
a server, as a graphics system like a workstation - as you say
these are really noisy.

Here is a quote from an online manual I just checked for the V215/V245:

"For serial devices, use the SER TTYB port and an RJ-45 adaptor with a
null modem cable. This port appears as ttyb in Solaris OS and OpenBoot
PROM messages and is not connected to the SC serial management port."

The OBP may configured to point at ttyb (via the env setting).
