Depends - machfb had a misfeature until a while ago that would make it pick refresh rates which a TFT may not like ( as in, it blindly assumed that the monitor is a CRT and picking the highest refresh rate the monitor could support based on its frequency ranges was the right thing to do )
That would only happen with an EDID-capable monitor.
