Are any of those likely to have hardware limits - apart from the
number of bytes representable in a single ring entry?

If hme is the sbus FEPS (fast ethernet/parallel/scsi) chip, ISTR that
has to use overlong receive buffers due to some rounding/length issue.
(Relevent brains cells are asleep.)
