Absolutely, Palle! Julian made me aware that the NFS-server has to provide NFSV2, which was disabled in my linux-box (as it is for most distros). The corresponding email traffic was off-the-list, will makre sure that we take the discussion back to the list. The effect that the kernel hangs as described continous with the only difference that I can now netboot the machine, whcih makes things easier when switching kernels.
