Turns out, with it running diskless, I can provoke this anytime with
"scsictl /dev/scsibus0 reset".  Since the only device on the SCSI bus
is the tape drive

st0 at scsibus0 target 5 lun 0: <, , > tape removable
st0: quirks apply, drive empty
st0: async, 8-bit transfers

I suspect it's the tape.  (Which makes a little sense; it's one of the
few things in the box with moving mechanical parts.  It also is
reasonable for it to have, for example, a mechanism to lock a tape into
the drive, which plausibly could sound like this.)
