Can you try glxgears(1)? It crashes by divide-by-zero, or
displays blank window, depending on GCC/Mesa versions.

For the second question, I don't know whether there is
practical usage of Mesa on vax, or not. But you cannot see
the colorful rotating gears, at least ;)
