Yeah, it's the TODR I was thinking about.
Possibly 0 if power lost, or not "working", which is a clear indication 
that time isn't available.

However, if it is non-zero, we don't really know much. It will wrap 
after approx 497 days. What happens then is unclear. Some machines might 
stop the counter, others just keep counting. If power have been lost, 
TODR might be zero, or might just be some low value. VARM recommends 
that a system sets it to something like a month in, so that it can be 
obvious if power was lost. However, that is only true if the system as 
not been powered off more than one year, otherwise, even if that counter 
is powered the whole time, you have no idea what time it is.

And yes, some machines don't even have a TODR. So this also becomes a 
question of what machine is emulated. But the majority of all VAXen have 
a TODR. Ones that don't: uVAX I, uVAX II, 8800, CVAX and VVAX.

But the "preposterous value" is just a subjective value that NetBSD 
triggers on. There are no "obvious" preposterous values.
