I think we should only create drivers for the more problematic 
chipsets.

The generic IDE driver is in busses/ide where it belongs to. The 
ide_adapter helper is indeed in generic, and there is no better place 
to put it yet, I'm afraid.

Not at all. The whole thing incl. the new driver API is still pretty 
rough.
