Very slow as

	Hello,

This week I tried to recompile current and noticed it took much longer
than usual. System accounting showed 'as' using up disproportionally large
amounts of time. ( up to 30 minutes for 200k of assembly on a 533 alpha
with sufficient memory;
ieee.s from /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/binutils/binutils/ieee.c)

So i installed the sep 2 snapshot to eliminate local mishaps...
no change.

Therefore I compiled a profiled 'as' in the hope to see what was taking
all this time. So much to my amazement the profiled 'as' assembled the code
in ieee.s in under one second.
As the profiled libraries are static I build 'as' with -static (non
profiled) and this version also finishes the file in under 1 second.

Finally in the hope it might give an indication I 'ktrace'ed the slow
dynamically linked 'as'. Again it finished in under 1 second. Still, without
ktrace it takes 36 minutes to assemble ieee.s.

Has anyone any idea as to either what is broken or what other tests I can
perform to find the issue at hand?

(dmesg appended)
