There was a problem with installing from emulated IDE CD drivers on
some hypervisors but I fixed that last year.

This looks like a problem with writing to the install target disk
rather than reading from the install media.  Virtualbox can do nvme
or sas (probably mpi(4)?) which I'd choose over sata/ahci.
