This sounds very much like an issue that was fixed post 7.9-release.

Have you tested current on this machine?

Or if you don't want to update to -current, you might be able to just update
the following source files, (no guarantees):

drm_fb_helper.h to 1.10
fb.h to 1.9
i915_driver.c to 1.33
intel_fbdev.c to 1.19
