i installed a snapshot with bsd from 'Wed Sep 29' with the
lif35.fs kernel (renaming the *36.tgz to *35.tgz).

this method worked on 712/100 and prbook and the installed
snapshot and kernel both work fine w/o those problems.

the lif36.fs on both of those systems shows same symptoms
as those from the op.
