It requires the machine to be suspended for some time.  Several
minutes, I guess.  I haven't set down with a stop watch yet.

netstat -rv gives no expiration time (expire 0) for the default
route.

I suspect it could be caused by the NDP cache entry expiring for
the gateway address.  That timer seems to behave in mysterious ways.
