I ran into these exact same issues a year ago installing 3.2 onto a 
Quadra 605.  Yes, SoftFPU will allow the installer to work (because the 
installer is a MacOS app), but of course has no effect on booting 
OpenBSD.

The hang you describe in the boot process above will happen if you do 
not have an FPU installed.  While there is supposedly an FPU emulator 
available for OpenBSD, i read (somewhere on the OpenBSD site) that it 
is broken (at least for the 040's).  My solution was to get an FPU 
(i.e. a full 68040) for my Quadra 605.  Once i dropped that into place, 
it booted fine.

It is possible that for the 030's, software emulation might work (and i 
thought that maybe it was working).  Any more details, i do not know.  
It's been a year since i read about it, and i was primarily interested 
in the 040's.  There IS a problem in the mask of some 68LC040's which 
essentially preclude software emulation from working on them.  My sense 
is that software emulation for the 040's, therefore, will never be 
supported in OpenBSD.  But if you dig a bit, you *might* find that 
emulation is indeed supported for the 030's.  However you'll pay a 
price in speed.  At any rate, understanding these issues may help you 
to understand what otherwise might appear to be conflicting info.

I think the 68882 is soldered onto the IIcx motherboard.  It wouldn't 
be easy to unsolder.  Probably the best way of acquiring one of these 
chips is to find an EtherNet card with one on it.  Failing that, you 
might just buy an 040 Mac.  I was able to find some LC 475's on eBay 
for about $5 (the 040 CPU's cost me about $20, however!)  These are 
great little server boxes, if that's what you want it for.  YMMV.

I think the limitation is that you can have at most one SCSI HD.  I do 
know that the SCSI ID does NOT have to be zero as i have a drive with a 
SCSI ID of 1 (although you do have to correctly identify the SCSI ID of 
the drive in the booter).

BTW, i went on over to the NetBSD site and downloaded their booter.  It 
has a few more features and some bug fixes.  It also allows you to boot 
accelerated Quadra 605/LC 475's.

Speaking of which, the OpenBSD 3.0 distribution has *newer* versions of 
some of the utilities than 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4.  Of course you can pick up 
newer versions on the NetBSD site too.

This is correct.  I've booted OpenBSD off of a drive in an external 
case connected to the SCSI port in the back (without an internal HD).
