Yes, serial console would help. You just need the correct setting in the
booter, a terminal emulator software and the cabel.

I would try a snapshot first, if it doesn't work, go back to 3.3 or 3.4.
As the 3.3 kernel seems to boot just fine, the whole system should run
ok. The init panic is because nothing else is on the disk.
When you have your 3.3 system running, try to compile a 3.4 or -current
kernel.
