I encountered similar problems on a Quadra 605 (with the same drive, 
btw).  Not sure if it was related to large partitions or not, however.  
My solution was to initialize the partition with newfs, followed by 
fsck -f (which may have been unnecessary, but i did it anyhow).  I 
currently have a 1 GB partition on the drive with no problems.  I'm 
assuming the problem was related to the MacOS Mkfs program, but can't 
say so with any certainty.  The "fingerprint" of a troublesome 
partition seemed to be a "lost&found" directory, and the usage numbers 
were off when doing a df -h.

Regarding the install procedure for 68K Macs, the MacOS installer 
program seems quite a bit slower than using tar.  It would be nice if 
OpenBSD shipped with a minimal tarball which contains only what is 
necessary to boot the system, run a decent shell (e.g. ksh), tar, gzip, 
df, fsck, mount, and newfs.  One could then use the installer to move 
the other tarballs onto an OpenBSD partition, and use tar to install 
the system proper.  That would speed up the installation process quite 
a bit, i think.
