I've been trying to get netBSD running on an old perform 550 (68030) and
not having much luck. If you've been able to go multi-user, or been able
to run gcc, please write me off-list.

(I was able to get netBSD on a CD in a magazine here. One of these days,
I'm going to get the 68882 and then I'll warn my wife in advance and do
some overnight downloads to get openBSD and give it a try.)

I didn't have much success with that on netBSD, either, until I figured
out I had to mount the various volumes by hand, just the same as if I
had booted in single-user mode. Root, of course, required the update
flag to be writeable.

What do you mean doesn't recognize? If its the disk utility that won't
cut a partition on a non-Apple drive, Jim's suggestion about the patch
is what you want. If it's something else, you'll need to tell us more.
