When I do this *every* touchpad movement causes the cursor to jump.
However, typing does NOT cause the cursor to jump.

If I restore my "original" xorg.conf,
--- begin /etc/X11/xorg.conf ---

	Driver "synaptics"
	MatchIsTouchpad "on"

--- end /etc/X11/xorg.conf ---
then I get the same result as my previous test: 
* the touchpad works fine
* the mechanical touchpad buttons don't work (pressing them doesn't seem
  to have any effect)
* the trackpoint ("nipple") has no effect
* clicking anywhere along the bottom of the touchpad produces the same
  actions I have bound to the left touchpad button
* the cursor no longer jumps!!  I've been typing for a half-hour or so
  and no jumps at all!!

So, definite progress -- thanks 1L<<20 for all your suggestions!

Next (later today) I'll try rebooting and disabling just one of {ims,pms}.
