I assumed you were trying to use odoo. wkhtmltopdf usually fails when there
are missing or empty elements in the source invoice.
i have had issues with this and they were always fixed by modifying the templates
to be proper

wkhtmltopdf probably can also be fixed, i just need an html that i can work with
