Until just now, I assumed the powerpc64 variant of OpenBSD was little
endian, but apparently it is big endian, which would be promising for
the G5. I am not too familiar with the details about other potential
differences other than that between macppc and powerpc64 unfortunately,
but I would be very curious about how feasible OpenBSD/powerpc64 is for
G5s as well.

If the installation runs stable, but the installed system does not, it
might be because it is using the a multiprocessor kernel, which the
installation does not.

You can try to boot by entering "boot /bsd.sp" in the boot> prompt to
see if that helps, and if it does "cp /bsd.sp /bsd" to make it
persistent. Of course you will only be able to use one CPU/core then,
but at least it is stable and gives you a starting point to diagnose
further issues.
