I am attempting to get sound to work on an MSI K7D-L Master dual athlon
board using GENERIC.MP, both the onboard sound (auich) and a
soundblaster live pci card(emu) fail to ever produce any sound, they are
both recognized and configured by the kernel as can be seen in the dmesg
below. When an application (e.g. mplayer playing an ogg file) it opens
the audio device and grinds to a halt for serveral minutes then it
suddenly attempts to play prints its status bar and locks up completely.
The most sucesss I had was, I was once able to cat a .au file to the
audio device again it took forever to open the device when it did it
played maybe a quarter of a second of garbled audio and locked up, I
have never repeated this again. I believe there is some kind of
interrupt problem, I have tried all manner of hardware configuration,
e.g. the SB Live with all the integrated components disabled
(lan,ac97,usb) etc, and variations on that theme, booting with GENERIC
dosent resolve this issue either,
vmstat -iz
interrupt total rate
irq0/clock 2411761 200
irq64/pciide0 21029 1
irq65/auich0 0 0
irq144/emu0 0 0
irq65/ahc1 41741 3
irq66/ahc2 0 0
irq67/ohci0 13 0
irq65/fxp0 6619 0
irq112/pckbc0 3683 0
irq114/pckbc0 23675 1
irq113/lpt0 0 0
irq177/pccom0 0 0
irq176/pccom1 0 0
Total 2508521 208
After repeated attempts to play files of various encodings through the
audio device, emu0 still shows no interrupts being taken, initially I
thought it might have been some kind of MP bug, (i.e. deadlock etc)
however as I said it does this booting GENERIC as well.
If some one could point be in the right directions I can provide more
diagnostic information.
