I've often entertained the thought of pooling money to pay a developer to do a specific thing. Although I've never brought it up because there's probably some reason to flame that idea... Then everyone would argue, and in the end it'd be another taboo topic to bring up on the lists (and of course nothing would have ever gotten done). I'd donate decent money if I were paying for a developer to do something I (and others) specifically wanted done (like SMP or fixed SCSI support).
