Prob with softraid on sparc64

Message-ID <[email protected]>
I am attempting to build a mail server and small drop-box service
on a Sun Fire V210/V240,Netra 240.

I have 4 140GB drives and want to configure sd0 & sd1 as root-on-softraid
and use sd2 & sd3 as a raid1 home partition.

sd4 will be a raid1 device with root and the OpenBsd OS
sd5 will be a raid1 device with home

I have done this in the past with amd64 machines, but this is not working
for me on this machine.

A complete log of the v240 power up and dmesg is provided below and a
transcript of my commands to make this work. I have quite a bit of
time invested in this and have had it working once, before it started
kernel panics on boot up.

We will see who needs a bug fix, me or the kernel.

I will provide a crash dump if the problem persists after getting over
these first two hurdles. I think what is presented here needs to
be sorted out first.

The short scenario is this:

1: I zero the first 10MB of all four disks with dd
2: I power cycle the box and boot form a cdrom snapshot from April 10
3: I use disklabel check that all disks have only C partitions

First problem is:
When I boot in step 3, all four disks appear in the roll call as expected
in dmesg, but when I try the command "disklabel sd3", rsd3 is not found.

Why ??? This seems like a bug to me.

After doing a MAKDEV, sd3 appears to work normally.

Continuing...

4: I label all four disks, correctly I believe. Please check me out in the
transcript below.

5: I attempt make the raid1 device sd4.

Second problem is:
I get an error message indicating some memory of past sd4 configuration attempts.
Yet I have zeroed the first 10MB of all four disks and power cycled the box.
Is there yet some lingering vestige of a previous sd4 and if so, where? or is
this a bug related to step 3 above.

# bioctl -c 1 -l sd0d,sd1d softraid0
softraid0: trying to bring up sd4 degraded
softraid0: sd4 was not shutdown properly
sd4 at scsibus3 targ 1 lun 0: <OPENBSD, SR RAID 1, 005> SCSI2 0/direct fixed
sd4: 134006MB, 512 bytes/sector, 274446192 sectors
softraid0: roaming device  -> sd0d
softraid0: trying to bring up sd4 degraded
softraid0: sd4 was not shutdown properly
softraid0: RAID 1 volume attached as sd4

Thank you for your time,
Ray
