Getting X to work in version 3.7

Forgive me; I am some what of a newbie. I have successfully installed OpenBSD. However I would like to use a GUI (Gnome or KDE) and am have a very hard time getting my Xserver to work. I do not believe it is a hardware problem because xorgcfg works in its graphical mode. startx and xinit and kdm all return a message which more or less says "fatal error no screens" or "no server"
before the program hangs it tries to access "/dev/mem" whereupon a message "insufficient privileges" appears. Does the problem lie in the fact that I am not configuring/editing the right files, perhaps do to the confusing situation engendered by OpenBSD's recent migration from XF86 or is it something else. Do I have to modify my kernel security level? If some one could clearly enumerate the specific steps I need to to take to get X running that would very much help me for now I am quite at a loss as to what to do. The internal man pages do not seem to illuminate the situation much
