invoking editor via "port ed"

After updating to DP 1.3.1 I can no longer use the editor via the EDITOR
variable.  I use a ~/.bash_profile file to set that stuff.  Here is the
error I get.

Error: unable to invoke editor /usr/bin/pico: Error opening terminal:
unknown.
