Another point is that updates proposed/accepted by the maintainer should be prioritized. The maintainer of a port has not much power, even when he fixes a bug, it can sit in the bugzilla for long. For example

http://bugzilla.opendarwin.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10170

is an update to the current version of bigloo, sees a change of maintainer. And the port worked for me...
