Mike,

     Essentially, you just need XDM to get the graphical login on your
iBook.  Also, to test colours in your xterm or rxvt is, if you have
GNU's 'ls' command (ls --help), you can try issuing 'ls --color=yes' and
see if things get listed in colour or not.  I've never had to do much
as far as setting things up go, in order to be able to get colour in my
xterm or rxvt whether I'm using Cygwin, NetBSD/sparc64, or 
Debian/PowerPC.  If you don't have the following in your system XTerm
resource file, then you will need the following in your ~/.Xdefaults
file:

       XTerm*VT100*colorMode: on
       XTerm*VT100*boldColors: on
       XTerm*VT100*dynamicColors: on
