If there'd be a simple flag or known patches to get noteworty better  
performance, you can be sure Apple would have used them.

Nevertheless, you can work on this. Set up darwinbuild to allow you  
building a whole system. According to <http:// 
release.opendarwin.org>, there are only few parts left and it should  
be possible to get a not fully complete, but working system.

Install your self-built Darwin onto a spare partition and boot it.

Then start tweaking things. I'd start with setting gcc flags in  
various parts, e.g. the kernel. Reinstall your evoluted system and  
compare performance. Some timing scripts will help you.

A switch to gcc-4 should give you quite some performance. No idea how  
much work this would be ... just try it. You know, you can't mix  
gcc-3.3 libraries with gcc-4 binaries, so this is a all-or-nothing  
switch.

Most important is to publish some notes here or on a website. Others  
will want to learn from your experiences.
