People tend to confuse xnu and Darwin anyway, so perhaps that's the  
reason (ie: xnu is the kernel to the darwin OS)..

They still refer to Darwin on the following site:

http://developer.apple.com/opensource/overview.html

See the following site for a bit more info on the kernel.  It will  
"take time" to fully document the build process:
