The Plan 9 OS was written in real mode, and the its applications are all 16 bit. For grid use, it seems that Plan 9 would only be a good choice for creating inexpensive low performance grids. If I want to use Plan 9 in a high performance grid by utilizing AMD64 CPUs in 64 bit mode it seems that I am out of luck. I could use the CPUs in compatability (legacy) mode, but it would be one step back from maximizing the CPUs best features, IMO. Where would one start to port Plan 9 to a 64bit processor? I'd imagine that one would need to create a new assembler, C compiler and a debugger, or modify an existing one. I would have posted this to 9fans, but everyone there appears to be happy with the current level of performance that Plan 9 provides. Granted, there aren't many applications that need a great deal of computational power; yet. :-/ -- Vester Thacker A dream is just an unfunded project.
