it was fairly poor even for vlong file offsets, let alone calculations!

i hadn't realised how bad it could be until i happened to look
at the generated code for some reason.

i'm actually fairly depressed by what i've read but because of the way
they've done it it's probably not too hard to support.  come to think
of it, i haven't got a machine either but someone here was interested.
i was only being sour because there has been so much golly gosh
enthusiastic hype about it (not here, i hasten to add, but elsewhere),
and it doesn't live up to even the little i expected.  i hadn't really
looked at it before.  i stupidly had grown the impression that you
flipped a bit in a control register and had a decent architecture for
a change!  i can't believe they kept the page tables.  i'm hoping i've
missed something.
