that's just an effect -- letting people know where others came from
(or where they authenticated)...

here's the idea's basics:

Q: how do we authenticate users from different administrative domains
(other plan9 installations) without having to add an account for each
of them on our system

A: use their own auth server

an example would be if i set up a collection of ports of unix programs
on plan9.ucalgary.ca and allowed people to access it using their
sources.cs.bell-labs accounts without me having access to their login
information there.
