of course, a solution to the 6 queens problem was first demonstrated
in the 1500s by Henry VIII, applying a remarkably straightforward
version of `divide and rule', partly in parallel, and all without the
aid of a computer!  (his method was later adapted to impressive effect
by the French, using a specially-designed processor, with the algorithm extended
beyond queens.)
