Plan 9 grid http://plan9.bell-labs.com/9grid
===========

1. Machines

There are 14 machines called
   (a b c d e f g h i j k l m n).grid.bell-labs.com.
They are 500 MHZ Celerons with 64 megabytes of memory.

'a.grid.bell-labs.com' acts as a secstore, auth server, and file server
for the b-n. 'b-n' are CPU servers.

'a.grid.bell-labs.com' actually runs in a separate auth domain and
file server. While it provides services for grid.bell-labs.com
it is itself not in the grid.

The file system is a 3.5 gigabyte fossil. The storage is NOT backed up
by a venti; if the disk dies, tough. The storage is considered
temporary. The address is 'tcp!a.grid.bell-labs.com!9fs'.

The secstore is a one factor (i.e. password only) secstore. Store what
you want. The secstore's address is tcp!a.grid.bell-labs.com!secstore'.

The authentication domain is 'grid.bell-labs.com'. The following line
should find its way into your /lib/ndb/local to use it:
         auth=a.grid.bell-labs.com authdom=grid.bell-labs.com

The CPU servers 'b-n' will accept 'cpu -h' connections only. If you
want to get at the file system, you have to mount the file server
directly (or use /mnt/term). The servers are connected by a hub.
Snoop to your hearts content.

2. Accounts

Anyone that is willing to give us 'cpu -h' access to their machine(s)
can use ours. Each account will get a secstore account, a /usr
directory, and a password in our authentication domain.

3. Limits

There are no per user limits. We're going to watch and see if everyone
can just be nice.

3.1 File system

Every night we 'du -a' the disk and count of the bytes owned by any
user. Whenever we're close to filling our disk limit, we'll start
yelling at the top 20 users. Once a week we'll send everyone usage
counts so you can police each other.

3.2 CPU

We're going to (haven't yet) instrument CPU to keep track of how much
CPU time we're giving out. Before we can decide what's equitable, we
need to see how things are used.

3.3 Bandwidth

We're going to limit total bandwidth if it starts eating up any
considerable part of the Bell Labs link. We'll do that at the router.

3.4 Acceptable Use Policy

Thou shalt not use grid machines to impose undue load on other
systems or networks, mask thy identity, distribute unlawful
material, attack other systems, or otherwise engage in illegal,
unethical, or harassing behavior.

Thou shalt not use the grid resources so heavily that others
are prevented from a reasonable fair share. If this happens
unintentionally, thou shalt amend thy ways immediately
when chastised.

Thou shalt not use the grid for anything critical, for the
grid is an experiment and may vanish without warning.

[email protected] will resolve any disputes and has
the final word, yea unto terminating accounts.
