I don't see why upgrading the base windowing system to xfree4.3.1
would suddenly enable the "splash/welcome page" feature of applications.
are you sure you didn't upgrade the application (like DDD) also?
Another possible reason is you cleaned your HOME directory, or logged
in as another user. Most applications will save your preferences
in a subdir (like $HOME/.ddd for DDD) in your home directory.
You will lose your preference (eg: no splash page, no welcome page,
no "tips of the day", etc) if you lose that dir.

BTW, you should be able to disable this feature, though the
method is application dependent. eg: for DDD, goto Edit|Preferences
goto "Startup" tab, and uncheck:
DDD Splash Screen
Tip of the Day
and it will ask you to restart DDD, and once it starts, you should
go to Edit|Save Options   to make your change permanent.
