it's not just the 'full' installation; any type except 'core' fails to make
the disk bootable.

i figured it is one option. but does it mean i would have to pkgadd hundreds of
packages one after another in the right order? that's basically my question -
is there a way to pkgadd or run some script and easily update core installation to full?

do you mean 'boot cdrom -s'? i tried that, and tried doing

   #installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0

but it did not work..
