I've carefully removed much of the mail to which I'm responding so I am in at least partial conformance with the Cultural Norms I apparently so gravely flaunt.  I guess that means I'm half-rude.  

Just to confirm this: I tried a Sun-style 13W3-VGA adapter on my Octane, and it didn't work.  I bought one labeled for SGI and it worked on the Octane, but not on a SparcStation.  ISTR the pinout doesn't look any different, which of course means that if you put all your 13W3 adapters in a drawer, you'll be picking through them to find the one that works for a particular machine.  That's the nice thing about standards: there are so many, everyone can have his/her own.  

And in case I haven't told that story here before, I replaced the broken display on the Voyager I got from Alan and it works just fine, especially since the parts beast from which I scavenged the monitor also had an add-on 32MB memory card.  So my Voyager now has 80MB, and it runs Solaris 2.6 quite nicely.  Anyone need a monochrome panel?  -- Ian

long before I passed my Voyager on to Ian.

In that discussion, Jochen said that there was more than one kind of
13W3-to-VGA cable.  Specifically, he said:
