Device entry weirdness for 3510 FC JBOD arrays

Greetings,

I am working with two 3510 FC JBOD arrays.  Both chassis fully populated 
with 300 GB disk drives.  I am using a V440 with two separate FC HBA 
cards (normally this host is connected to a 3510 FC RAID array.)
Directly attached - no SAN involved.

I connected the first 3510 FC JBOD array.  I wanted to check the drives 
and overwrite anything that might be on them before connecting it to a 
3510 RAID array.

When I used format to look at the disks I saw that I had new devices for 
six of the disks in the array - two times over (What I expected to see):

/dev/dsk/c2t22d0 matched-up to /dev/dsk/c5t22d0 from t22 to t27

For the six other disks in the array I only saw a single device entry 
for each disk, but it was a multi-path device:

/dev/dsk/c7t500000E011E65350d0 (for example)

I disconnected the first JBOD from the V440 and then connected the 
second 3510 FC JBOD array.  This time it showed me what I expected to 
see, which was a total of 24 device entries over the two controllers - 
one entry on each controller for each drive.

I disconnected the second array, reconnected the first - with the same 
results as the first time - half the disks displayed multi-path entries 
while the other half showed regular disk device names.

I am confused as to why only half first array's disks showed up as 
multipath, yet the none of second array's disks did.  As far as I know 
the only difference between the two JBOD arrays is the loop ID number.

In /kernel/drv/fp.conf on the host I have "mpxio-disable="no";" 
uncommented - So I would have expected all the drives to show up as 
multi-path on both arrays, but not half of the drives in just one of them.

I imagine I am missing something obvious - isn't that normally the case?
