SUMMARY: RMC for DS15 (Remote Management)

Thanks to Tim Cutts, Alan Davis and Oisin McGuinness for their
responses. The responses were very similar but I will quote Alan Davis.

There is no direct way to connect the com port to a TCP/IP network. It's
common practice, however, to use something like a DecServer900TM or
Cisco 2509RJ asynch router or one of the Raritan or other remote console
boxes to aggregate the serial consoles and allow telnet access to them.

I use both DecServers (32 ports, available from www.dnpg.com) and the
Cisco 2509RJ and 2511 (16 port) to give me remote serial console access
to Alphaservers, DLnnn Linux servers, network switches and firewalls,
etc.

I use ConsoleWorks from TDi for most of it but am looking at converting
them all to use conserver (www.conserver.com) to manage the remote GUI
and logging.

RMC has a very limited set of functions. It's not like the iLO
management that gives you PC-like capabilities.

RMC allows you to halt in, halt out, and power cycle the server. 
It monitors and can display hardware environment, fan speed, temp, etc.
I can be configured to dial out if defined thresholds are exceeded and
send limited status messages.

For most installations the serial console feature is more useful with
RMC only being used as a last resort to remotely reboot a hung server."

Managers,

We are looking to the RMC to provide basic administration functions for
a large pool of Alphaserver DS15s. I have not tested or used this
feature previously.

Can anyone offer documentation references for configuration of the RMC?
Does anyone know if Ethernet could be substituted somehow for the modem
connection to the com port?
