Btcreate vs. bttape?

Can somebody shed some light for me on the differences between btcreate
and bttape?  Specifically, what is the appropriate use for each one?
I'm looking to create a bootable tape that I could conceivably use to
recover a lost server --  bypassing the need to boot from cd, install
the os, and then installing the latest patchkit.
