Kernel panic, taoe changer library

Hi all, me again:  Can I use an updated cam_changer.o file by just moving
the newer file into /usr/opt/CLC311/mc/, relinking and recompiling the
kernel, or do I need to have a complete package installation?  

I keep getting a kernel panic when I try to do a # file /dev/mc16 using the
older library file.
