Nearly missed this question
I have grown Phormium tenax in my garden up until winter 2000/01 (very 
cold and wet) which eventually saw it off.  It grew well in a sunny 
position but like the literature says it isn't fully hardy during long 
cold wet spells like we have here.  Guess like the Agaves that were 
grown down the road from here at Glenhirst Nursery, about 1 winter in 10 
will kill it if precautions aren't taken.  Over here it's possible to 
get quite large specimens (both species and the many cultivars), but at 
a price.
