Ray,

I add plenty of grit (6mm granite chippings) to aid drainage. I am in 
the middle of constructing a raised bed and the soil mix, maybe this 
will surprise you, is 100% grit with a few cms of sieved soil and 
sand raked into the surface to help bind the grit as it leaches 
through. Does anyone else on this board employ such a practice for 
growing agavaceae species? The aim is to provide the best drainage 
possible to overcome the winter wet problem.
