Henry...I see by the map that you are just SE of San Fran.  Weather there
should be plenty fine for in the ground.  I have them out and experience
frequent short duration drops into the teens each winter.  They are planted
"high and dry" so as to avoid any excess wet feet.  Had 32.4" rain the first
week of July and no problem.  My largest about 24" is in dappled shade and
does well with "benign neglect".  My potted ones need watering about every
one to two weeks in 90-100 degree weather depending on how hot it actually
is.  They are in morning sun only and are doing OK.  Mine seem to grow
reasonably fast, the large one going from14" to 24" in the last six yrs.
Seldom do I fertilize them because I have lost several thru flowering and
want to delay this as long as possible.    Larry
