NOBODY IS BEING LYNCHED IN THIS ILLUSTRATION. There is no
gallows. Public punishments in this period were common, and
indentured white people and white slaves were also part of the
culture of the time. I am a scholar of the period of which you speak,
and the illustration and art which it preserves. I hope nobody is
making a case for me being insensitive to SLAVERY.

Black people had black and Native American Slaves at some period in
our American history.

The Mayflower passenger from which my husband is descended was an
indentured servant. Not truly a freeman. I believe there were only
two such lowly stationed persons on the Mayflower.

He is also a descendent of one of the first women hung as witches
during the Salem witch trials, Mary Towne Eastey.
