I enjoy genealogy as a hobby and have a long list of French Canadian ancestors, and a short list of Scotch/English forebearers, the latter from Hunmanby, Yorkshire, Eng. I am loathe to report, however, that none of them ever grew a single sansevieria as a house plant. Its a bit embarrassing. If any reader has an interesting ancestor, I for one would like to read about them here. I raise my glass to you, Roger! Allow me to mention that my lovely wife has a ggg grandmother, Sara Hanks, whose sister, Nancy, was mother to Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves.

NOBODY IS BEING LYNCHED IN THIS ILLUSTRATION. There is no gallows. Public punishments in this period were common, and indentured white people and white slaves were also part of the culture of the time. I am a scholar of the period of which you speak, and the illustration and art which it preserves. I hope nobody is making a case for me being insensitive to SLAVERY.
Black people had black and Native American Slaves at some period in our American history.
The Mayflower passenger from which my husband is descended was an indentured servant. Not truly a freeman. I believe there were only two such lowly stationed persons on the Mayflower.
He is also a descendent of one of the first women hung as witches during the Salem witch trials, Mary Towne Eastey.
